How to move a tree from MyHeritage with a GEDCOM file
MyHeritage announced it was leaving Russia at the end of 2024: the pages of Russian users were to be deleted on 1 February 2025 (Inc. Russia, 01.01.2025). If you downloaded your tree as a GEDCOM file back then, upload it here: people, dates and links are in place. Stored in Russia, free, no limit on the number of people.
The product is currently available in Russian for families in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
How to move the tree: three steps
The same steps in more detail, with menu names, are in the step-by-step guide on importing GEDCOM from MyHeritage.
- Export GEDCOM: in the tree settings of your old service, usually an item with the word "Export"
- Upload it to Heritage AI: in the Family tree section choose the GEDCOM import. You see a preview first: how many people and links, and who is already in your tree. Typos in names do not throw it off
- Move the photos separately: GEDCOM carries people and links, and you add photos and documents to the media library and attach them to the right people
Did not download the file?
We cannot recover deleted data. Look for a file with the .ged extension in your downloads, your mail and your cloud storage. If there is none, start with yourself and your parents and ask the rest of the family by link: they can answer without registering.
If you cannot open a file you found, see how to open a GEDCOM file. For a tree from the Drevo Zhizni program, see moving by GEDCOM.
The import preview
Before anything is written you see a preview of the import: for example, 214 people, 389 links, 3 people who seem to be in your tree already (you decide), and photos that you add separately. First the preview, and the transfer only after your confirmation. (The numbers are an example.)

Questions and answers
How do I move a tree from MyHeritage to Heritage AI?
Export the tree from MyHeritage as GEDCOM (the standard format of genealogy programs) and upload the file in the Family tree section. Heritage AI shows a preview and tells you if someone you import is already in your tree, allowing for typos in names and a difference of a year or two in birth dates. You decide on every match.
What about my MyHeritage account if I did not download the file?
According to Inc. Russia (01.01.2025), MyHeritage announced it was ending support for the accounts of Russian users and deleting their pages on 1 February 2025. We cannot restore deleted data. Look for an old .ged file in downloads, mail and cloud storage; if there is none, rebuild the tree and ask relatives by link, no registration needed for them to answer.
Are photos and documents transferred automatically too?
GEDCOM carries people, dates and family links. Photos and documents are moved separately: you upload them to the media library and attach them to the right people and events.
Can I export the tree back?
Yes. You can download the tree as GEDCOM at any time and on any plan.
The tree stays the same; only where it is kept changes
Transfer by GEDCOM file. Registration is free and needs no card.
