Guide: moving from Drevo Zhizni

Moving from Drevo Zhizni (Tree of Life): transfer your tree with a GEDCOM file

The desktop program Drevo Zhizni ("Tree of Life") can export to GEDCOM, according to its developer's help. Export the file and upload it here: people, dates and family links are transferred, and you see a preview before anything is written. Photos are not stored in this format; add them to the media library separately.

The product is currently available in Russian for families in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

What you get after the transfer

People, dates, places and family links move over from the file. The tree opens in a browser, on a computer and a phone, and you can keep it together with relatives.

You can send a relative an Ask relatives link: they can answer without registering.

GEDCOM does not carry photos and documents. Add them to the media library and attach them to people and events by hand.

Step 1. Export the GEDCOM file from the program

The developer's English help (genery.com, checked by us on 29 October 2026) gives the path as File > Export > Gedcom. The Russian version of the program words the items its own way: look for "Export" and the GEDCOM format.

According to the same help, if the program copies photos on export, it puts them in a separate folder next to the file. The .ged file itself has no photographs, so keep that folder too if you need the photos.

Step 2. Check the file

Open the file in the GEDCOM viewer on our site. It runs in the browser and the file is not sent anywhere. You see how many people and families it holds and whether names read correctly.

Files from older programs are often saved in Windows-1251 or UTF-16. We detect the encoding when you pick the file. If some characters could not be read, we warn you before the transfer.

Step 3. Upload the file with a preview

Register and open the Family tree section. In the "..." menu choose the GEDCOM upload. If your archive is new, you can also upload a ready tree at the first setup step.

First you see a preview: how many people and links the file holds. Nothing is written until you confirm the import. If someone seems to be in your tree already, run the match check and decide for each person yourself.

The file can be up to 20 MB. A large tree takes longer, up to a few minutes: the page tells you the file is being processed.

The transfer is not one-way

You can download your tree back as GEDCOM at any time, on any plan, from the Family tree page.

Drevo Zhizni is the name of another company's program. We are not affiliated with it.
