“It runs in our family.” Behind the phrase there is something real, but it is less direct than it sounds. Diseases are inherited in two different ways, and it is worth not confusing them.

Direct inheritance

The first way is direct inheritance: a specific altered gene determines the disease. Such conditions are usually rare, for example hemophilia or cystic fibrosis.

Predisposition

The second way is much more common: predisposition. The genes do not cause the disease on their own, but they raise the risk, and whether it comes into play depends largely on lifestyle and environment.

The conditions with a noticeable hereditary component include cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, a number of cancers, and metabolic disorders. If such diagnoses were common among your close relatives, your baseline risk is higher than average. That is not a sentence. It is information you can work with.

What is the signal: a repeat, not a single case

The signal is not a single case but a repeat. Three things should draw attention:

  • the same disease in several blood relatives;
  • an illness at an early age;
  • several serious diagnoses in one person.

An illness in advanced old age is an ordinary story. An early one in a close relative says more.

What to do with this

Collect your family history of illness: who had what, and at what age. Then show it to a doctor. That is enough for the doctor to assess the risk and, if needed, refer you to a geneticist. This material is general and does not replace a doctor; any specific conclusions come from a specialist who knows your situation.

In Heritage AI you can gather such a history by relative in one place. Start with the free research plan.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between an inherited disease and a predisposition?
In direct inheritance a specific altered gene determines the disease, and these conditions are usually rare. A predisposition means the genes only raise the risk; whether it shows up depends largely on lifestyle and environment.
Which patterns in a family are worth noting?
The same disease in several blood relatives, an illness at an early age, and several serious diagnoses in one person. A single illness in advanced old age is less informative.
Does a family history mean I will get the disease?
No. It can mean a higher baseline risk, which is information rather than a sentence. Take your family history to a doctor, who can assess it and refer you to a geneticist if needed.
