“What did your parents and grandparents suffer from?” A doctor does not ask this out of politeness. The answer can sometimes change which tests are ordered and what to watch for earlier. The trouble is that the question catches people off guard. Preparation solves it.

A family medical history is the information you have gathered about the illnesses of your blood relatives. It is not a diagnosis for you. It is context: what occurred in the family, in whom and at what age. This is general information, not medical advice.

What to tell your doctor

Focus on close blood relatives: parents, full brothers and sisters, grandparents. For each, note:

  • serious chronic conditions (heart and blood vessels, blood pressure, diabetes, cancer);
  • the age when the condition began;
  • the cause of death, if the person has died.

Age is often more important than the diagnosis. A heart attack at forty and at eighty mean different things for assessing risk.

It is normal not to remember everything

If there is no exact diagnosis, say it as it is: “heart trouble”, “had sugar” (the family word for diabetes). A general wording is still a landmark. The main thing is not to invent a precision you do not have.

How to arrive prepared

Do not try to remember everything on the spot. Bring a short note: a list of relatives and, next to each, their illnesses with ages. Such a sheet saves appointment time and keeps you from missing something important when you are nervous. Preparation does not replace a consultation. It makes the consultation specific.

In Heritage AI you can collect family health information in advance and prepare a PDF to show your doctor. The health section is switched on only with your separate consent. See how it works: /en/faq.
