A family tree can be drawn in an hour: rectangles, lines, dates. But in that form a person turns into an entry. A well-made tree stays a clear diagram and still comes alive. Here is how to get there.
Structure first
The most common way to start is an ascending tree: you are in the center, your parents above you, then grandparents, and so on deeper into the past. It is convenient because you move from the known to the unknown. A descending tree (from a common ancestor to all of his descendants) becomes useful once you have gathered a lot of relatives.
The basics for each person
For every person, record at least: first name and surname (for women, the maiden name too), years of life and place of birth. This is the skeleton that makes the tree readable. Do not chase completeness. It is better to enter all your closest relatives briefly than to get stuck on one person with a detailed biography.
What brings the tree to life
After that, the tree breathes through details. One photograph. One fact you do not want to lose: a profession, a favorite place, a family saying. Attach a document if you have one. Then kinship stops being a line and becomes a story: here is a person, here is their life, here are the people around them.
Keep one source of truth
If the tree lives in your head, in notes, in a chat and on a printout all at once, it splits into contradictory versions. Pick one place — paper, a program or a service — and keep the tree there. Treat the rest as drafts. And start small: your closest relatives, with one photo and one fact for each.
In Heritage AI the tree is a living one from the start: photographs, events and stories are attached to each person. You can try it with the free research plan at /en.
Questions and answers
- How should I structure a family tree?
- Most people start with an ascending tree: you in the center, your parents above, then grandparents and further back. It moves from the known to the unknown. A descending tree, from one ancestor to all descendants, helps later when you have many relatives.
- What should I record for each person in a family tree?
- At minimum: first name and surname (and maiden name for women), years of life and place of birth. Then add one photograph and one fact, such as a profession or a family saying, and attach a document if you have one.
- Why keep the tree in one place?
- If it lives in your head, notes, chats and printouts at the same time, it splits into contradictory versions. One place for the tree, with everything else treated as drafts, avoids that.
