The FAN Method: How to Find an Ancestor When There Are No Records
The ancestor seems to have vanished and there are no direct records. Then you look for them not in their own documents but in other people’s: as a godparent, a witness, a neighbor. This is the FAN method.

The search hits a wall: the ancestor seems to have vanished. There are dozens of people with the same surname, the church register has not survived, and the peasants do not yet have surnames. For dead ends like this, genealogists have a technique: look for the person not in their own documents but in other people’s. It is called the FAN method, from friends, associates, neighbors.
The idea
A person may have left no direct record of themselves but still show up next to others: as a godparent at someone else’s baptism, as a guarantor at a wedding, as the neighboring household in a census. When you find them in someone else’s record, you get both a confirmation and a new lead.
Why the FAN method works
In the past, families and neighbors stuck together. They stood as godparents for each other’s children, married nearby, and moved in groups. An ancestor’s circle is therefore part of their trail, and often a matchmaker or a neighbor lets you jump over a missing link.
How to apply it
When there are no records about the ancestor themselves, study everyone around them:
- people with the same surname in the same village;
- families they married into or were related to;
- guarantors at the weddings of their children.
Write down the connections. The person you need often turns up as a godparent of a neighbor’s child, with a precise note of whose son they are.
When it helps most
It is especially useful with common names and with peasants. When a village has ten men called “Ivan Ivanov”, it is the circle of acquaintances that helps you tell the right one apart. The method takes patience and tidy notes, but more often than not it is what breaks the brick wall that a direct search cannot.
In Heritage AI you can record not only direct ancestors but also their circle: godparents, witnesses, neighbors. You can start with the free research plan.
Questions and answers
- What does FAN stand for in genealogy?
- Friends, associates, neighbors. The method means researching the people around an ancestor to find the ancestor when direct records are missing.
- How do I find an ancestor who has no records?
- Look for them in other people’s records: as a godparent, a witness or a guarantor, or as a neighboring household. Study people with the same surname in the same village and the families they were connected to, and write down every link.
- Does the FAN method work for peasant ancestors?
- It is especially helpful for them. Peasants often had common names and, at first, no surnames, so the circle of neighbors and relatives is frequently the clearest way to tell one person from another.
