The register for the year you need is missing and the nearest census is far away, so the search stalls. Confessional lists, the yearly record of parishioners by household, can close that gap.

Sooner or later a hole appears in a search. The parish register for the year you need has not survived, and the nearest census is far off in time. The thread seems to have snapped. Russian confessional lists (ispovednye rospisi) often close that hole.

A confessional list (also called ispovednaya vedomost) is a yearly list of parishioners who attended confession. The priest kept it every year. What matters to a researcher is something else: the household is written down as a whole. It lists the head of the family, his wife, the children, and sometimes other relatives living together, with ages and relationships. In effect it is a small yearly census of the parish.

Why confessional lists are useful

Parish registers (metricheskie knigi, which record births, marriages and deaths) capture individual events. Revision lists (revizskie skazki, tax censuses of 1719–1858) were taken once every several years. Confessional lists fill the intervals. They show that a family lived in this parish, in this composition, in a specific year, even when other documents for that year have not survived. They are a patch that stitches a torn chain.

Where to look

In regional archives, together with other parish documents. Some can be found in open databases. As with parish registers, you need to know the specific parish: the church and village of your ancestor.

Requests to Russian archives are written in Russian. Heritage AI prepares the letter text for you.

Use several documents together

On its own, no single document gives a full picture. But a parish register, a revision list and a confessional list together confirm each other, and then a family line is not lost even when papers are missing. In Heritage AI it is convenient to mark which document confirms each generation.
