“I must record Mum telling her life story” is a thought that hangs in the background for years. It seems like a big project: sit down, build a timeline, miss nothing. Because of that, most of the time nothing is done. But recording your parents’ memories can be simpler. You can start with one conversation.

Drop the task of “recording a whole life”

One topic at a time is enough. How they met. What their first home was like. What they remember about their own parents. A small fragment told calmly is worth more than a perfect life story that was never started.

Use the voice recorder on your phone

You need no camera and no lighting. Sit beside them and do not switch the recording off. A voice with its pauses keeps a person more alive than text. You can transcribe it later.

Interview questions that get parents talking

Help with questions, and keep them open:

  • “And what happened next?”
  • “Who else was there?”
  • “What did you feel then?”
  • “How did you meet?”
  • “What was your first home like?”
  • “What do you remember about your own parents?”

Do not argue about details and do not correct. Let them tell it as they remember it. The aim is not to check the facts but to keep the tone of voice.

Record regularly, a little at a time

One story today, another in a week. This pace does not tire anyone and does not turn a warm conversation into a duty. Label each recording right away: whose voice, about what, when.

In Heritage AI recordings are attached to the person themselves, so the story does not come loose from the one who told it. If the family came from Russia or the USSR, you can also note names, places and years as you hear them, to use later for archive searches. Start here: /en.

Do I need special equipment to record my parents’ memories?
No. The voice recorder on your phone is enough. Sit beside them and keep the recording on. You can transcribe it later.
Should I correct my parents when they get details wrong?
