When a person is gone, the voice leaves first. Photographs keep the face, but exactly how someone spoke, laughed or drawled a favorite word is forgotten within a couple of years. To preserve a loved one’s voice is easy, and you do not need a studio.
Record an ordinary conversation today
The simplest way is to record an everyday conversation now. Every phone has a voice recorder. Do not stage a solemn interview. Sit down over tea and ask them to tell you something of their own: how your parents met, what the childhood home was like. Calm speech about simple things sounds more alive than any staged monologue.
If you want a little more structure, ask a couple of gentle questions and simply do not stop the recording. The pauses, the chuckles, the “well, how can I put it” are the person. You do not need a perfect track. You need the intonation.
Do not forget old video
Recordings of holidays and trips often carry the voices of people who are no longer here. You can pull the sound out of such a video separately. Sometimes it is the only surviving track of a beloved voice.
Save it so it survives a new phone
Label every file: whose voice, when, about what. A voice without a label gets lost among hundreds of files over the years. In Heritage AI, a recording can be attached to the person themselves, next to their face and dates, so it does not vanish in a gallery (free research plan: /en).
